The regex crate is Rust's standard regular expression engine. It guarantees linear-time matching on any input, which makes it safe for untrusted patterns and text, but it leaves out backreferences and look-around for that reason. When you need those features, fancy-regex adds them with a backtracking layer that falls back to regex for the parts it can. ripgrep uses the same engine family, so performance is well tested.
