Asynchronous

14 projects

Rust's async/await syntax only defines futures. A runtime is needed to poll them, and Tokio is the de facto standard. It provides a multi-threaded work-stealing scheduler, timers, TCP and UDP sockets, file I/O and synchronization primitives, and most async crates for HTTP, databases and gRPC assume it. async-std, once the main alternative, has been discontinued, and its maintainers point users to smol for a smaller runtime.

Underneath Tokio sits mio, a thin cross-platform layer over epoll, kqueue and IOCP. You rarely use it directly unless you are building your own event loop. futures-rs supplies the Stream, Sink and combinator traits shared across runtimes, plus executors for simple cases. kameo builds an actor model on Tokio, which suits systems with many independent stateful tasks.

Some projects take a different route. may and coio provide stackful coroutines, so code looks synchronous but still yields on I/O. These avoid async colouring but do not interoperate with the Tokio ecosystem. For most applications the practical advice is to use Tokio, keep blocking work in spawn_blocking, and reach for tokio-console or tracing when tasks misbehave.
